EMMA

Emma stayed on the porch for an hour after her dad left. The morning calm continued in his absence, the birds the only active participants in bringing sound to a new day in their fragile world. Right before she was going to head inside to check on Lynn, she heard footsteps through the open door. A moment later, Lynn appeared in the doorway, blinking as her eyes adjusted to the new light.

“Hey,” Emma said.

“Hey.”

“Did you sleep okay?”

“Yeah, I did. I’m surprised I didn’t wake up at all last night. That may be the first night I’ve slept straight through in weeks.”

Emma thought about her dad, and how she’d found him lying on the couch in the middle of a nightmare, clutching his gun. The thought scared her, but she pushed it aside, not wanting to bring it up with Lynn or for her to sense something was wrong with her.

“Breakfast? There’s more inside, but you’re welcome to finish this first if you’d like.” Emma pointed to the sparsely filled plate. She and her dad had polished off most of what she’d brought out.

“That sounds great. Thanks.” Lynn sat in the chair previously occupied by her dad.

“So, how are you feeling?” Emma asked. “I can’t imagine what it must feel like to have a baby growing inside you.”

Lynn put two peanuts in her mouth and considered Emma’s question as she chewed. “I honestly haven’t had a lot of time to process it all. Not with everything going on. But if you’re asking if I’m excited, then yeah. I’ve always wanted to be a mom. But you know, I can’t say I’m looking forward to wobbling around in a few months, especially in this heat.”

Emma chuckled and snapped her fingers to get Lexi’s attention. Lexi jogged around the edge of the house and up the porch stairs, where she took a small piece of jerky from Emma.

“You stay where I can see you, Lex.”

Lynn smiled at Lexi’s wagging tail.

“She’s a good dog. I always wanted a dog, but Jeremiah wouldn’t allow animals in the house. He loved them, but hated the shedding.”

Emma didn’t know whether to let the comment about Jeremiah pass without comment or not. Lynn solved her dilemma for her.

“You know, he was a completely different guy when we first met. He didn’t become an asshole until after we’d been dating for a few weeks. I’d been living at the compound for six months at that point, so I was somewhat blinded by the newness of it all and didn’t really see him for what he was.”

Emma thought about her brief experience at the church with Jeremiah. When she’d first seen him, she’d been completely enthralled. First by his looks, then by his charm and charisma. She understood how he had so many people living there with him as he did, and how he had managed to convince three women to simultaneously be his wives.

“I can see that happening pretty easily,” Emma said.

“Yeah, I had stars in my eyes. I was the last wife, you know.
